It's the Christmas season, and, as usual, The Sound of Music is on Sunday night television again. I'm not sure why it's seen as as a holiday movie. It has nothing to do with Christmas, and actually, as I look at their outfits, they're pretty summery. However, this movie has been part of my Christmas tradition for almost as long as I can remember. (Oh, the Baroness was just snippy to the Captain. Love it!)
The first time I watched this movie I fussed about it. I had my annual Christmas strep throat/ear infection, brought on by my allergy to the live Christmas tree. My Daddy fixed some blankets and a pillow on the floor, poured some spice tea, and told me to lay down and watch this movie about some children singing. I whined that I didn't want to see children sing songs, I wanted to play. But watch I did, and I fell in love! (Now Liesl is carrying little Gretl up the steps. Goodbye! That's my favorite part.)
Soon Tara and I were pestering my kindergarten teacher to let us act out the aforementioned So Long, Farewell scene on her steps over and over. Tara preferred to be Liesl and have a boyfriend. I liked to be Gretl, feign a lisp, and pretend to take a little nap on the steps. Neither of us would be Marta because she got a spanking with the book.
I have watched this movie for years and years, bonding with so many friends over the scenes and songs. Once I acted out "The Lonely Goatherd" on the Avalon patio with the darling Andy Epstein during Courtney's birthday party. I'm really sorry, Sug.
It's a classic passed down to children, though Tyler and Dylan will have no part, and I think I must go now and watch the Baroness drive Maria away out of jealousy!
